Gather at the River

Gather at the River

Gathering of the SM Province of the United States – Louisville, KY, June 30 to July 4, 2010

It was a joy and an honour to be with our Marianist Brothers to celebrate the first eight years of the unified US Province, the installation of the new Provincial Council, and to share the gifts and challenges of their strategic plan, Vision 2020. The welcome was warm, the prayer inspiring, and the laughter contagious. As Marianists, we speak often of the importance of ‘reading the signs of the times’. But, what we read often requires difficult discernments. In small group discussions and in “open mike” sessions, the sharing was honest and the listening sincere. The Spirit was alive, indeed!

MLC Malawi Mourns

Prisca Chiwowa

Prisca Chiwowa

We join our brothers and sisters in Malawi in mourning the loss of Mrs. Prisca Chiwowa, wife of Mr. Israel Chiwowa.  Prisca was a member of the newly elected Council for East Africa (Education). Those who attended our Kenya meeting will remember Israel as one of our delegates from Malawi. May we unite in prayer and love across the many miles for the Chiwowa family and all who mourn the loss of our sister.

Josephine Njeri, MLC Kenya President, shares the following memories:

Greetings and peace of Christ to you all.

It’s so painful to accept the death of Prisca. I spent a considerable amount of time with her in our Regional council meeting. She kept us (Ladies) awake up to the late hours of the night, all laughing our hearts out even when we were already so exhausted. I sat with her and came up with a wonderful document on Spirituality. I walked with her in the Faustino garden sharing uncountable number of things.

Dear friends, I am urging you to remember Mr.Chiwowa. Not so long ago he lost his mother, and now his wife- the two most close women in his life. He needs your prayers and company. To my sisters and brothers in Malawi, may you find it in yourselves some moments to be with Mr.Israel Chiwowa. And the Marianist family at large, let us join our brother in mourning this beautiful and wonderful gift God had given us. Let us also have some moment of silence in honor of Prisca.

I cannot explain how I feel right now. All I have to say is that I thank God that I had a chance to share moments with Prisca. I will miss her.

She had a responsibility in the education office to make sure that we have a regional members’ register.  I knew she would do a perfect job, but look at what God has done, He chose her at this moment in time. It is painful my friends, painful.

May God rest her soul in eternal peace.

Together with Jesus and Mary.

MLC-CLM Circular

International Organization LogoDear friends,

I have just completed a circular for our Marianist Lay Communities around the world. It’s called “Being Marianist, Being Family“. Our family spirit is an important aspect of our charism. It is also one of our greatest challenges. We are an ecclesial movement that spans the globe with a diversity of languages, cultures, gifts and needs. We are also part of a larger spiritual family that includes the Society of Mary, the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, and the Alliance Mariale. How do we take the inspiration of our family spirit and live it in practical ways? The circular, of course, does not provide all the answers. But, I hope that it will be useful for our present conversation and efforts to live more deeply our family spirit. I firmly believe that our Marianist Family is a model to be shared with our Church and our world!

Thank you to Carol Ramey, the Director of the North American Center for Marianist Studies (NACMS), for her guidance, advice, support, and help with the references. Carol is a long time friend and mentor whose deep knowledge and wisdom of Marianist things have helped to form and nurture me over the years.

Muchas gracias to Izaskun Arias. Izaskun has been a translator for the international team, the World Council, and our international meetings for many years. Her wisdom and insights come from observing first-hand our journey as a global Marianist Family. Her friendship and support are a real gift to me, and to all of us.

And mérci beaucoup to Mary Harvan Gorgette, my friend and OLRT community member. Mary provided the French translation and helped me to edit and polish the final draft with her scholarly mind and Marianist heart. Both Izaskun and Mary showed such care and commitment to ensure that the message remained true in the translations. For this I’m so grateful!

CLM México

Our CLM in México have just completed their 7th National Meeting in Puebla de los Ángeles. Juan García Jiménez, the out-going National Responsible, shares the following report. We thank Juan García for his leadership service to the Marianist Family and welcome Sra. Mireya as the new National Responsible. Click here for photos from the meeting.

CLM Mexico

Fraternalmente :

Juan García Jiménez

CLM Poland

Here is some exciting news from Félix Arqueros, our European Responsible.

Witamy Polskę do grona Wspólnoty Świeckej Towarzystwa Marianistów!

Welcome to our Marianist Lay Comunity in Poland!

Español

Greetings to all!

On May 28, 2010, I visited the Marianist community of Warsaw, Poland. I give thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to accompany the birth of the first CLM in Poland. During my visit, I shared experiences with the religious community who, after 17 years in Poland, are immensely happy to see our Family grow.

1ª CLM Polonia

I give thanks to God to be able to accompany the birth of the CLM in Poland. The first adult community has a total of 10 members. After a meeting and pilgrimage, we celebrated the Eucharist. I received a formal letter requesting to be accepted as a Marianist Lay Community and I read a letter of welcome from Isabella. I presented each member with a Marianist cross as a sign of welcome to our great family. In Poland there is a great feeling of nationalism, and the members were touched by the fact that our president has Polish ancestors.

Entrega carta Isabella al reponsable CLM Polonia

I also had the opportunity to meet with a group of university youth interested in learning more about the CLM. They would like to form a fraternity in September. It was an exciting encounter. They are very animated and thanked me a lot for the visit.

Reunion con jovenes

The reception on the part of the religious has been excellent. I felt very much at home, despite the difficulties of language. I thanked them a lot for their support and interest.

Comunidad marianista

I also had an opportunity to have an encounter with the head and advisor of the Marian Congregations in Poland. They have been present in the country since before the community era. In recent years they have revived, and are walking with the Polish Marianist Family. In spite of our differences, it was an enriching encounter with much possibility of sharing mutual knowledge. The Marian Congregations direct the school in which the religious Marianist work, and they feel very close to our family.

In short, these days have been a wonderful encounter of happiness and the grace of God. I thank you for all or your prayers. They have served to guide my steps.

A hug

Family Spirit in Ireland

It will take some time to fully process the richness of the retreat experience in Ireland. There was joy in the gathering, celebrating, and praying as the community of Our Lady of the Round Table. And there was the joy of sharing this experience within a family setting. It really affirmed for me, yet again, the reality of our Marianist family as FAMILY.

The Society of Mary community in Ballybrack showered hospitality on us from all angles. Temporal hospitality included wonderful meals, comfy rooms, and transportation and tours of local sites. Liturgical hospitality welcomed us into a praying community that reminded me of that “something” that we have as Marianists – the gift of communal prayer that is truly participatory, inclusive, compassionate, and non-hierarchical. It is prayer that reflects the Marian model of Church that we yearn for so much. Familial hospitality gifted us with the warmth and intimacy of family.

We were welcomed by the Brothers as true sisters in one family. They shared our excitement and reflected back to us the awesomeness of this historical moment in our community. Our closing liturgy included the gospel passage from John 14, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” Fr. Neville summed up our experience during a shared homily, “you have opened a new room in the house”!

Our experience was enriched by sharing it with family, within family. Thank you to Frs. Neville and Mike, Brothers Jim, Fred, and Gerry, and Susan. May our loving God continue to richly bless our Marianist family in Ireland!

OLRT Meets!

OLRT_2010

(clockwise from top) Joanne, Julie, Lorna, Isabella, Susan, Chris, Marceta and Mary

What do you call the first ” in person” gathering of a community that has been meeting daily online for five years? Is it a reunion? But, technically, don’t we have to meet first to have a reunion? We  already know each other face’s from photos, voices from phone calls, and spirits from the daily sharing of our prayers and life. But this was our first ‘in the flesh’ visit….an incarnational moment. And what a moment it was! Maybe one day I’ll be able to put this moment into words, but all I can do right now is savor it

We were given an incredible welcome by the the Marianist Brothers of Ballybrack. They have wined us, and dined us, and even provided us with some local Irish talent, Sean Frayne,  for an evening of song and laughter. Sean is an alumnus of St. Laurence school. And, thanks to Susan, our days are packed with sight-seeing and fun.

Last night, we gathered for prayer and shared gifts and items brought from home.  We joined Pati in Philadelphia via a Skype call, wishing she could have been with us. Joanne and Chris suprised us with a new OLRT logo. The ceramic version is in the group picture above. Joanne also gave us each a carved, wooden symbol to take home. This morning, we finally had a community lectio prayer in person. It was amazing to hear the voices and see the faces.

Mary shared her excitement at finally being together for Eucharist. We gathered with the Brothers to celebrate the feast of St. Catherine of Siena – lovely timing! During our shared homily, the immensity of the moment was felt by all. We were touched to hear the brothers speak of their happiness to be part of our retreat, as much as we were happy to be with them. Yet another great moment of Marianist family spirit.

As usual, I’m writing this blog late in the evening and we’re getting up early tomorrow for a trip to Dublin. Hopefully I can post more tomorrow. I need to get a good group shot of all our hosts….with another dear friend who’s visiting from the other side of the pond!

Thank you to all who are sending best wishes and prayers!

Ireland Retreat!

I belong to a ‘cyber’ Marianist Lay Community called Our Lady of the Round Table. The original members met online in May 2005, during the North American Center for Marianist Studies (NACMS) online course on Marianist Community, facilitated by Carol Ramey. We felt a strong bond of community through our online discussions and wanted to build on the experience. I had been sharing my daily lectio prayer and reflection by email with a dear Benedictine friend, Sr. Grace Kowolski, OSB. We used the daily liturgical readings. The format was simple. We posted a line from the readings that would be our inspiration for the day. We shared briefly why these words spoke to us – what was God trying to say to ME? And we shared the prayer that was the result of our meditation. This worked very well for Grace and me. We wondered if this format would work for our new community. Well, almost five years later, we can say that it’s working rather well! J

Our community became more global over the years. We remained faithful to our daily practice, although we all share times of being a ‘lectio cheat’! These are the days when we are unable to post a prayer, yet are nourished, supported and inspired by the prayers of others. Our global membership and diverse time zones also means that prayers pop in to the computer throughout the day. We have had a window into different parts of the world as we have shared our local reality and culture. We have embraced the prayer needs of family and friends around the world, and have been blessed with many prayers answered. Although we meet online, we are truly a community.

Tomorrow I’m travelling to Ireland for our first OLRT retreat! Some of us have met before, but this will be the first time we will all be together. (Pati is unable to be with us, but we’re planning to have a Skype call on Wednesday.) It’s going to be a grand reunion!

Two very special people will be with us in spirit. Bro. Walter Oberster, SM was a founding member of OLRT. He died January 11, 2006. We were blessed to share his last days through his prayers. We felt his spirit with us when we decided to be an intentional Marianist Lay Community on February 2, 2006. And my dear friend and mentor, Sr. Grace, died on July 4, 2009. I still miss her daily, expecting her lectios to pop up in my email box. How I wish I could share this experience with her. She would be tickled by it! I know that the love and prayers of Walter and Grace will be with us. They will surely be smiling in that great communion of saints!

If I can, I’ll try to send some wee updates from Ireland.

We pray as one family, in union with the Church, for an increase in numbers of faith-filled and committed priests, religious sisters and brothers, and lay women and men throughout the world and within our own Marianist Family.
